對于運行中的鍋爐，應對蒸汽鍋爐外部的可見部分經常進行檢查，主要檢驗鍋爐管理，鍋爐本體檢驗，安全附件、自控及保護裝置的檢驗，輔機和附件的檢驗，分汽(水)缸、鍋爐范圍內管道、支吊架的檢驗，水質管理和水處理設備的檢驗等。必要時，可拆除局部絕熱材料進行檢驗。
1、安全附件、自控及保護裝置檢驗
壓力表在最高許可工作壓力處是否劃有紅線標記，是否定期檢驗，有無鉛封。壓力表是否指示正確，可用標準壓力表進行校驗。安全閥需要校驗安全閥的開啟度和回座壓力，運行時才能校驗，安全閥校驗后應有鉛封。

2、水位表是否清晰，兩側水位表指示是否一致，閥門等處有無漏水、漏汽。水位表汽、水連通管是否暢通，照明設備是否完好等。
